Farmed Animals

The problem with factory farming is that its success is measured in profits with very little regard being paid to the animals' comfort and psychological needs, or to the need to exercise natural, instinctual behaviour. In this country, animals are often kept in extremely confined quarters, resulting in the manifestation of behavioural aberrations which are sometimes self-destructive. In order to avoid this, the farming industry resorts to maiming animals: e.g. debeaking and de-toeing of battery chickens, tail amputation in pigs, etc. Animals also suffer from extreme stress, which is directly responsible for many of the diseases of intensive farming. Another horror is the transport of animals to abattoirs over long distances, crammed in tiers onto open trucks. Abattoirs and the methods used to kill animals are also a cause for concern. Legislation that specifies adequate space allowances and enriched environments, as well as controlling transport conditions and methods of slaughter, is urgently needed to protect farm animals.
